Bruce is fully insured and trained. He is registered and accepted as an assistance dog and disability medical aid.
A rough start
Bruce is an American Staffy (American Staffordshire Terrier), born into a bad start in life. Roy's son bought him to give him a better one, and it was decided Roy would look after Bruce for a while. That wasn't easy for Roy, who lives with autism and mental health issues — but the longer he had Bruce, the more he grew to love him.
In the spotlight
Bruce's star has well and truly risen. He has been to Ozzy Osbourne's house, and it was the TV media who gave him his famous name: Bruce Doggy Osbourne — the Prince of Barkness.
He has featured on Bargain Hunt on TV and in the press, and has even auditioned for Britain's Got Talent. He has met thousands of people — and a lot of famous faces too — with over 36,000 photos of him taken.
He's all over the internet: just Google "Mr B Bruce the Assistance Dog" or "Bruce Doggy Osbourne" and see for yourself!
Becoming an assistance dog
Since then Roy has spent months training Bruce to be his assistance dog — to sense panic, anxiety and autism attacks, to comfort him, keep him calm with command words, and watch over him constantly. Bruce can sit, lie, and stay; walk on and off the lead; navigate public places without distraction; love people; and avoid other dogs. He now wears his service, support and assistance dog collar, coat, and lead as identification.
Even so, Bruce has been refused on the local bus twice — so we are pursuing a court case for discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, and we have had leaflets printed for businesses to display.
A show-ring champion
Bruce was nominated mascot dog for the Wirksworth Hot August Nights festival 2025, where he wore glasses and rabbit ears and posed for hundreds of photos. Everyone loved him and his good behaviour.
Bruce's dream
Roy would love for Bruce to visit care homes and hospitals, bringing happiness and joy to the people there. We also want an official owner-trained register with ID cards for dogs like Bruce — so owner-trained assistance dogs can get the recognition, licence and acceptance they deserve, instead of being refused entry until they explain their rights. Roy would like to help train and assess other owner-trained dogs too.
